When "O" made its debut, it broke the mold of traditional theater, even by
Cirque du Soleil standards, by turning the stage into a 1.5 million-gallon
pool of water.
Throughout the performance a platform rises out of the water to create
different landscapes. And through visually stimulating vignettes, the
unconventional show is sure to reawaken your imagination.
Following the story of "O" is akin to following a dream. With no particular
plot, the audience is taken into a world of visceral imagery. The basic
elements – earth, water, air and fire – come to life. Each scene evokes
emotion, wonder and awe. Vignettes stretch our imagination between the
real and the surreal. It's as if you're staring at a Salvador Dalí painting come
to life where mismatched objects pair up to make a sublime whole.
And it's the cast of performers, composed of world-class trapeze artists
and synchronized swimmers, remarkable high divers, contortionists, aerialists,
dancers and clowns, that keeps "O" so high in theatergoers' esteem.
One scene summons the element of fire: As the lights in the theater dim,
the stage turns solid and dancers perform intricate fire dances as fl ames
lick the air. In another, a ladder hangs from a platform outlined by a glowing
circle, which is suspended from the top of the theater. You can hear the
audience gasp as the high divers jump off and perform beautiful twists,
turns and somersaults before landing in the water.
It's the combination of superior performance and dreamlike topography
that makes "O" so breathtaking. The aquatic journey is one that connects
with even the most linear of minds.
